Mac Mini series for Heavy M?
Greetings folks,
I'd like to ask for some advice on a suitable machine to run HeavyM on.
Currently I am doing all my prep work and scene design on a 2016 Macbook Pro, but even though it has a core i7/16gb in it, the machine may as well be powered by a rat in a wheel thanks to the Intel Iris graphics that Apple thought fit to bestow upon it. It does however not crash, and has a nice big and ergonomic trackpad which makes creating the scenes easier.
I am currently using a Thinkpad P14s with a mobile Radeon in it for running the actual installation, but I am getting stability issues, visual glitches and flickering on the UI (but not the output), and while it has more power than the Macbook does, it still isn't great. Once the software is loaded up and outputting it will happily work as long as no one disturbs it so it's good enough for now.
I have a fairly important gig in December 2024 so it makes sense to upgrade the machine I'm running it on before then. As so far I am seeing much better stability on OSX, I would like to ask the community whether anyone is running this on an Apple Silicon based Mac Mini, and if so how they are finding it for graphics performance? I understand that HeavyM isn't running native yet but from what I gather the GPU in it is supposedly decent compared to the somewhat gutless Iris.
Failing that I will consider a Mini ITX Windows PC with a discrete graphics card, but wanted to see what people here are using and whether anyone has some feedback on that so I can budget for this machine.

If you don't find users with your configuration here on the Forum, you might have more luck posting on the Facebook group!
On our side, while we have not made performance tests on this particular machine and, as you said, at the moment HeavyM runs via Rosetta, recent Mac computers with M1/M2 chips are a recommended configuration. We have no reports of specific bugs on this model in particular.

Yes sorry about this, we know Facebook is inconvenient for a lot of people, but at the same time the group has been there for a long time and we know some users still follow it more than the forum.
